I don't know about other people, but in a good kung fu movie, the main character has to have a burning passion to kick ass. They have to be wronged deeply or have something very important at stake. I just saw two movies that I think exemplify this spirit.

Fighter is about a Muslim girl in Denmark trying to make it as a kung fu fighter. They managed to capture the cultural tension very well, and gave her a really good reason to go out and kick ass. I don't want to spoil too much of the movie, but I have some issues with the fighting. At some points it's rather realistic, at other points its not. Crazy high jumps and flips in the air in a dream sequence are all well and good, but during a tournament fight? Also the setup of the final tournament was a bit odd. In spite of it's flaws, it was a good movie to watch. Maybe it's just me, but the actress really seemed like she knew what she was doing physically. I wouldn't be surprised if she has taken some form of martial art before.

Chocolate, directed by Prachya Pinkaew of Ong Bak fame is about an autistic girl who learns to fight by observation. She lives next to a martial arts studio and obsessively watches and rewatches a copy of Ong Bak. (I liked that little self palgarizing touch.) She then starts going after people who owe her mother, who is dying of cancer, money. As in Ong Bak, the main character does all of her own stunts, which is pretty damn amazing. The locations for the fights are interesting. I won't spoil the ending, but it's definitely not Hollywood. There isn't much of a plot, but a movie like this isn't really about that, it's about the action, which is plentiful, and very fun to watch.

Edit: WIERD COINCIDENCE!!

Independant Lens is on and there's a documentary called Shadya about a female professional martial artist who is Muslim and it's tearing her family apart. Her Dad is so cool.

Life is so strange!

Short film I saw on imagemakers today that I thought was very simple and beautiful.

Also did searches on some musicians I haven't been following closely that I like. Rambling thoughts ahead.

You've been warned. )

All I've been doing is goofing off online and studying for the GRE.

I feel like the test makers have perfected the art of tricking people. I'm terrible at their word problems because the wording is so particular. Not only that, I can't seem to finish the questions accurately in the time period. I think if I simply do enough problems and look at enough answers to the ones I get wrong I should get a somewhat decent score. I don't even know what a decent score is. Maybe I should look that up.

I received a very awesome gift at a white elephant gift exchange one of my friends hosted. I'll have to list the contents once I get it out of my car.

There are a lot of doubts and concerns I have about grad school, but I don't want to regret missing a chance at getting a higher level of education. There will be plenty of time for me to pursue adventure after my master's degree. I'm not a wasted old geezer yet!

Happy Holidays

This is unrelated to the season, but it's a mini movie I enjoy a lot.

The new director is on a rampage. Nearly all the staff have been written up since she started. Today several staff were called in for various reasons, and five people were put on 30 day probation periods. If the management isn't happy with their performance by the end of January, they will be fired. I was given a verbal warning about two weeks ago for being "Easily distracted and lacking energy." I can't bring myself to care very much about it.

I recall one staff saying that she got a memo for putting styrofoam in the microwave. Another person was put on probation for wearing a hoodie (she took it off during her shift) and not smiling enough. Two of the staff put on probation today have been working here for years.

My guess is that they don't want to give us raises. The director told us at the last staff meeting that we would be getting a letter with our paychecks on 12/23. If she was happy with our performance she'd be giving us a good raise, unhappy, no raise. This is her way of getting out of it.

I hate her very much.

Changing the world.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It seems that it has been about a year since I have made a post here. I don't have much to say at this point but getting something up is better then nothing.

A reoccurring thought that I have is about changing the world. Maybe more of getting myself to a place that I feel that I can start to make positive changes. In the last year I have done more work to get to that point then I have before. Sure I haven't gone balls out and thrown myself into it completely but I haven't sat still. At some point if things happen as they happen I will do some sort of writeup.

I'm and Andrageddon's house with TWO FRISKY BOYS!
It's a lot of work taking care of them.
Especially when the house internet doesn't like my computer. (I think it's dial-up)
I brought my super warm jammies cause I didn't know how cold it would get in here tonight.
It's lonely though! I don't know if I would ever want to live by myself. It'd be nice to have the tv on in the background but guess what! NO TV! I don't know how these savages live. At least there's plenty of tea to drink!
EDIT: I have plans for the evening, but I'm free during the day. That eliminates some stuff, but I'm still interested in going to the craft faire. The scavenger hunt might be best for another weekend. I'm thinking January 2nd or 3rd.

Trannyshack is having its annual star search competition. The only thing is that it's from midnight to 3 am. Driving home from the city at that hour doesn't seem like much fun.

There's also a robot fighting contest at the San Mateo county fairgrounds: ComBots Starts at 2pm goes until 7pm.

Both events are $20 advance, $25 at the door.

There are also less costly alternatives:

The scavenger hunt that Kadie and I didn't get a chance to finish at The Jejune Institute. Free.

Renegade craft fair. Admission is free, but there will probably be many cute things to buy.

Cheap punk music at Annie's Social Club $7, and as always at 924 Gilman Street between $5 and $10.

Other possibilities:
- Roast s'mores
- Smash plates (At night only!)
- Karaoke happy our at Ganba
- Museum (Exploratorium, Chabot Space and Science Center)
